Twins Markieff and Marcus Morris go back-to-back in NBA Draft

Twins Markieff and Marcus Morris go back-to-back in NBA Draft
On Sept. 2, 1989, Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris were born seven minutes apart in North Philadelphia. On June 23, 2011, the twin brothers and former University of Kansas standouts were chosen back-to-back, just seven minutes and 13 seconds apart (thanks, ESPN Stats and Information), in the 2011 NBA Draft, in Newark, N.J., about two hours away from their place of birth. Symmetry’s a heck of a thing, ain’t it? The Morrises are the third set of twins to be chosen in the first round of the NBA’s first-year player entry draft, following sibling pairs Horace and Harvey Grant and Brook and Robin Lopez(notes). Horace was the 10th overall pick of the Chicago Bulls in 1987, while Harvey went 12th to the Washington Bullets the following year. The New Jersey Nets chose Brook with the 10th pick in 2008; five picks later, Robin came off the board to the Phoenix Suns. As he was in birth, Markieff Morris came first, going to those same Suns with the 13th selection in the first round of this year’s entry draft. Phoenix must have a thing for twins; in addition to the Lopez and Morris picks, they also took Taylor Griffin(notes), the identical twin brother of Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin(notes), with the 48th pick in the second round of the 2009 Draft, in which Blake was the top overall selection. After his brother exited the green room and stepped to the podium, Marcus Morris briefly allowed the emotion of the moment to overtake him. It was a touching scene, one that drove home the likelihood that the twins, inseparable since birth, would find themselves on different teams and in different cities for the first time in their lives. Shortly thereafter, in an interview televised on ESPN’s draft coverage, a more composed Marcus cracked a joke about the prospect of splitting from Markieff. “It ain’t the end of the world. I’ll see him again,” he said. “I mean, I’ll send him flowers or some fruit. It’ll be good.” Marcus Morris (right) didn’t have much time to compare gift basket prices, because minutes later, the Houston Rockets chose him with the 14th pick in the first round. Jeff Eisenberg, the ace college basketball writer behind our Y! brother blog The Dagger, echoed the sentiments of many college and draft observers who were somewhat taken aback by Markieff Morris coming off the board before Marcus, who was named Big 12 Player of the Year last season. “It’s not a huge shock that Markieff Morris would go as high as No. 13 to Phoenix, but it’s definitely a surprise he came off the board before his more highly regarded twin brother Marcus,” Eisenberg wrote. “Maybe the fact that Markieff has a defined position at power forward made him more attractive to teams than his twin brother, a hybrid forward who critics say lacks the height to play in the paint and the lateral quickness to play on the perimeter.” Whatever the reasoning behind Phoenix electing to take Markieff, the seven-minutes-older brother noted a mix of elation and anxiety after hearing his named called. “Once I was called, I still had a little, you know, a little pressure on me waiting for my brother to be called,” Markieff Morris told reporters. “Once he was called, it just came off, and we are both grateful and thankful.” “It’s just amazing. It’s just amazing how things play out,” Marcus Morris said. “[I'm] just thanking God. He really has a plan for us. It just plays out the exact way we wanted it to. It’s just so amazing.” Related: Blake Griffin, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, New Jersey Nets, Phoenix Suns, Washington Wizards, NBA draft

Guardian: Pryor will stay at Ohio State (AP)

Guardian: Pryor will stay at Ohio State (AP)
JEANNETTE
Pa. (AP)—Terrelle Pryor once chose Ohio State over every other big-name college football program in the country. His godfather believes Pryor will pick the school again. Willie Burns
the legal guardian Pryor lived with while he was in high school
said Friday that he’s confident the embattled quarterback will return for his senior season—as abbreviated as it might be—and not apply for the NFL’s supplemental draft. “I think he will stay in school
” Burns said. “He likes football. Only time will tell. He could change his mind in a minute. “But he if he does leave
somebody done pressured his butt—bad.” Pryor’s future with the Buckeyes muddied this week following coach Jim Tressel’s resignation amid a widening NCAA investigation into possible violations by the school. Pryor has already been suspended for the first five games next season for selling memorabilia for cash and tattoos
and the star quarterback could face additional penalties pending the outcome of an NCAA probe into his use of cars. Burns said he spoke to Pryor two days ago. And while they did not discuss specifics about Pryor’s football future
Burns believes his godson intends to play for the Buckeyes this fall. “I asked him how he was doing and how is he coming along
” said the 63-year-old Burns
recently hospitalized after a minor stroke. “He says he’s just trying to get all this out of his head and get on with his business. I don’t like to bring up the sports to him. He’s got enough people asking him questions. If he wants to talk about it
then I’m open-hearted to him.” Like many residents of this tight-knit town in the rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania
Burns has been troubled by Pryor’s portrayal as a villain and the one most responsible for Tressel’s stunning downfall after a 10-year
trophy-filled run at Ohio State. Pryor isn’t without faults
and has made his share of mistakes. However
Burns doesn’t think the blame should be aimed at Pryor. “I hate to see Tressel go. He’s a good man and a good coach
” said Burns
who is also a godfather to Ohio State running back Jordan Hall
one of Pryor’s high school teammates. “The way I heard it
this has been going on for a while at Ohio State with this tattoo guy. “It’s just bad that Terrelle went over there and got involved. I know he likes tattoos and all this. I don’t know what’s all behind it. We haven’t talked about any of that.” Pryor has not spoken publicly since leading Ohio State to a 31-26 win in the Sugar Bowl over Arkansas. The NCAA allowed Pryor
offensive lineman Mike Adams
running back Daniel Herron
wide receiver DeVier Posey and defensive lineman Solomon Thomas to play in the game despite finding they had sold rings
trophies and apparel in 2009. All five must sit out OSU’s first five games next season. Pryor’s silence—and Ohio State’s scandal—have prompted rampant speculation that his days behind center for the Buckeyes are over. He promised Tressel he would come back and play as a senior
but now that the sweater-vested coach is no longer around
it’s hard to predict what he’ll do next. The NFL’s labor situation only complicates matters. If Pryor stays in school
he could finish a stellar career (he’s 31-4 as a starter)
repair his spotted public image and perhaps improve his chances of being one of the top picks in next year’s draft. If he applies for the league’s supplemental draft—assuming there is one—he would break his pledge to Tressel and enter a pro game many believe he’s not yet prepared to play. Knowing the 21-year-old as he does
Pryor’s high school coach is guessing that Ohio State will have No. 2 for one more year. “He’s an unbelievable competitor and a tremendous leader
” said Ray Reitz
who won a state title at Jeannette High with Pryor in 2007. “He’s always wanted to show people what he can do
and I think he’s determined to see t
his through. It’s an unfortunate thing
what’s gone on. He’s a good kid. He’s got a good heart. He’s not a vicious kid. Half of the stuff people are saying isn’t true. “He’s made some mistakes. Who hasn’t? But to link him to ruining the Ohio State program is completely out of touch.” Sitting on his front porch
Burns recalled Pryor’s glory days at Jeannette— the incredible performances
the recruiting circus
the state title. He’s heard the critics who believe Pryor should have stayed closer to home and gone to Penn State. But Burns is certain Pryor made the right decision
and hopes his godson makes another one. “I hope he does stick it out at Ohio State
” he said. “The way the NFL is going now
I’m glad he’s staying there because you don’t know what the devil they’re going to do. When he was looking at colleges
he had so many of them that I told him which ever one you choose
I’ll back you 100 percent. “I still think he made the right choice.”

Haynesworth road-rage trial postponed (AP)

Haynesworth road-rage trial postponed (AP)
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP)—A judge on Thursday postponed Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth’s(notes) road-rage assault trial to give Haynesworth an opportunity to settle the matter with the alleged victim. A Fairfax County prosecutor said at Thursday’s hearing that Haynesworth is pursuing an “accord and satisfaction” agreement with the alleged victim. In misdemeanor cases, a judge can dismiss assault charges when the victim acknowledges that he has received satisfaction for any injuries, usually in the form of a financial settlement. The judge rescheduled the case for Tuesday, the second time it has been postponed. Haynesworth’s lawyer, Steven Merril, declined comment after the hearing, which lasted less than two minutes. But Merril indicated to the judge that he did not believe a trial would be necessary. The judge also maintains discretion to reject any accord and satisfaction agreement under Virginia law. Haynesworth did not appear in court Thursday. Police say the alleged victim accused Haynesworth of punching him in January during a traffic altercation in Reston. The man told investigators he made a gesture at the driver of a pickup truck he thought was following too closely. The two vehicles stopped and the truck’s driver, later identified as Haynesworth, got out of his pickup and allegedly punched the other driver. Haynesworth’s agent has said his client is innocent. Haynesworth also is scheduled to go on trial in July for misdemeanor sexual abuse after he was accused of fondling a waitress at a hotel bar in Washington. He has pleaded not guilty. Haynesworth is two years into a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Redskins, who signed him in 2009 to what was then an NFL record of $41 million in guaranteed money. But Haynesworth clashed repeatedly with Coach Mike Shanahan and frequently skipped workouts. Shanahan suspended Haynesworth for the final four games of the 2010 season for conduct detrimental to the team.

Ohio St. delays on awarding ‘gold pants’ (AP)

Ohio St. delays on awarding ‘gold pants’ (AP)
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—An NCAA investigation into rules infractions by the Ohio State football program has delayed release of the team’s 2010 “gold pants” charms, awards that team members receive if they beat rival Michigan. The Gold Pants Club that distributes the trinkets is waiting to see if the NCAA vacates any of last season’s wins, President Jim Lachey, a former Ohio State All-America offensive lineman, told The Columbus Dispatch for a Sunday story. The university-licensed club pays about $50 each for the charms. Ohio State has suspended five players, including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, for the first five games of the 2011 season for violating NCAA rules by selling a Columbus tattoo parlor owner several pieces of memorabilia— including the 2008 gold pants charm Pryor earned for the 2008 season. A letter from a U.S. attorney sent in December stated Ohio State players had received between $12,000 and $15,000 in cash, free tattoos and reduced-price tattoos for providing the merchandise, some of which was signed. Coach Jim Tressel failed to reveal that he knew about the players’ violations, as required by his contract and NCAA rules, and the university suspended him for five games. He also was fined $250,000, required to make a public apology and receive a public reprimand and to attend an NCAA compliance seminar. The NCAA is still investigating the 10-year coach of the Buckeyes, and the university goes before the association’s infractions committee in August. The NCAA has said penalties could include vacating wins from last season. “We’re dealing with some outstanding issues that we’ve never had to deal with before,” Lachey told The Dispatch. “If they vacate the win, it makes no sense to award the gold pants, at least in our minds. And if you hand them out and say, `Oh yeah, we’ll need to get them back if the win is vacated’—I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t be a smart way to go.” Ohio State beat Michigan 37-7 in November for an unprecedented seventh straight win over the Wolverines. Lachey said he’s also considering withholding the charms in the future until players are no longer on the team and have used up their eligibility to play, when selling the items would no longer be an NCAA violation. The practice of awarding the gold pants charms started after coach Francis Schmidt took over the program in 1934. John Hicks, an All-America offensive lineman under coach Woody Hayes, said he was bothered to see team members bartering them. “They are a symbol of being part of a special team, of a bunch of guys who worked hard for a common goal of beating our rival,” he said. “Sometimes when you’re 18, 19, 20 years old, you don’t realize what that really meant to you, but when you get to 60 or so, you do.” Information from: The Columbus Dispatch, http://www.dispatch.com

Ryan Kerrigan goes to Washington Redskins with 16th pick in NFL draft

Ryan Kerrigan goes to Washington Redskins with 16th pick in NFL draft
Pros: Strikes with great quickness off the snap, even out of a three- or four-point stance – Kerrigan gets up and starts moving forward in a big hurry. Uses his low stance as leverage to explode up and forward. Can “dip-and-rip” very well; he gets low around the edge and uses his hands to separate from tackles as he’s turning to establish a pass rush arc, and closes in with a fast re-direct. Fast in doing so to the degree that tackles who don’t have a quick kick-step are going to be in big trouble against him. Changes offensive gameplans in that a blocking back is often required to take him out as he gets around the tackle. Not a great splitter of double-teams, but can ride more than one player outside against the run. As fast as he plays, Kerrigan has a very good eye for misdirection – doesn’t get fooled a lot on traps and counters. Blasts off the blocker well when crashing in at an angle. Really good leverage concept for his height (6-foot-4, 255 pounds); he’ll get under pads easily and win some strength battles. Cons: As quick as he is, I wonder if Kerrigan’s pass-rush style will work right away in the NFL, especially as a lower weight. He has a decent bull-rush and impressive upper-body strength, but his game is built very much on edge speed, and a lot of tackles at the NFL level will be able to work that out. With a new transition to edge rusher/linebacker obviously in the cards (the weight loss sort of gives it away), he’ll need to learn a lot about coverage unless his new defensive coordinator just wants him moving forward all the time. Loses his footing on stunts and loops at times because he’s going at Tasmanian Devil speed. What does he bring?: In the right system – either paired with an elite defensive tackle who can split the blocking load or as a pure “endbacker” in a five-man or hybrid front – Kerrigan has the potential to dominate. He’s proven that he has the determination to succeed, and I expect him to excel with his pure speed, first-step burst, and ability to turn the corner.

On its face
Tyson Chandler’s animated entreaty for the Dallas Mavericks to metaphorically fight “shoulder-to-shoulder
shield-to-shield” in a phalanx formation in their upcoming first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers seems like sound strategy. Employing a strong
tightly knit zone look was key to Dallas moving from a roughly average defensive unit last year to a top-10 outfit this year. It makes sense that the Mavs’ defensive leader would want to refocus the team’s efforts there while jazzing up the fanbase in another clever clip devised by the Dallas video squad. Just one problem
via the always accurate and reliable Wikipedia: The Hoplite Phalanx was weakest when facing an enemy fielding lighter and more flexible troops without its own such supporting troops. Hmm. Between LaMarcus Aldridge
Nicolas Batum
Rudy Fernandez
Wesley Matthews and Gerald Wallace
to go with flanking pieces Andre Miller
Marcus Camby and a lessened Brandon Roy
Portland can throw some pretty interesting collections of light and flexible troops out there. On the other side
Dallas jitterbug/potential firestarter Rodrigue Beaubois is questionable for Game 1 with a sprained foot
while long-shelved swingman Caron Butler
working his way back from a ruptured patellar tendon
is considered “extremely unlikely” to be ready to appear during the first round. Plus
Dallas has given up more than 112 points per 100 possessions to the Blazers on three separate occasions this year (well-above-average nights
even for a top-10 offense like Portland’s)
including the last two times they’ve played. Both were Portland wins. Come to think of it
maybe this wasn’t the best war metaphor heading into the series. The animation’s still cool
though. International readers (“Int’l read’rs”): If the clip above isn’t rocking for you
please feel free to peruse the battle cry elsewhere

See? You’re dancing, Jameer Nelson! Look down at your feet and how beautifully they’re moving. It’s just that simple when you’ve got a teacher who cares, like Dwight Howard. (Well, a teacher who cares and has watched the Winter Ball dance sequence from “Angus” like a billion times. That probably goes without saying, though.) Best caption wins a very, very ’90s soundtrack (NOTE: not really). Good luck. In our last adventure: Three cheers for Delonte West! Video: “The Incredible Hump” for Most Improved Player, for your consideration
As the internet has become more of a platform for NBA teams, the league’s dog days of late March and early April have increasingly become a time for the less successful teams around the league to pimp their players for postseason awards. Last year, the Minnesota Timberwolves put out the most creative campaign with “Brewer’s Blend,” a coffee-themed set of ads and mugs for swingman Corey Brewer, because, I don’t know, he energized the team in addition to having a name that made the connection pretty easy. Then again, maybe Brewer turned out to be decaf, because the Wolves traded him with few reservations before February’s deadline. This season has been relatively light on these sorts of campaigns so far — perhaps as a way to save money in advance of the coming lockout — but the New Jersey Nets have now entered the fray with “The Incredible Hump,” a webpage and video clip that attempt to sing the praises of forward (and Kim Kardashian paramour) Kris Humphries for this season’s Most Improved Player honors. Humphries is strong, and his name starts with “Hu,” so I suppose that means he is easily comparable to the Incredible Hulk. On the other hand, he seems like an honorable sportsman on the court, not an angry brute, and the Nets went ahead and mixed metaphors here by using Digital Underground’s classic “Humpty Dance” as music. Pick one next time, guys. This would have worked perfectly fine — or maybe even better — if Humphries had dressed up like Shock G in the guise of “Humpty Hump.”Apart from its aesthetics, the MIP campaign itself is an odd gambit. For one thing, the award’s criteria are even more nebulous than those of the MVP — should MIP go to a good player who becomes a star, or a decent player who becomes a good one, or are both those considerations misguided because they typically correspond to increases in minutes played rather than per-minute averages? What, exactly, defines improvement? Humphries has seen his PPG and RPG averages rise considerably, but he also has seen his minutes jump from 17.7 to 27.9 per game. Are his stats really that surprising? On top of that, Humphries is an unlikely candidate for MIP just because the honor typically goes to a player who sees a drastic jump in his scoring average. If you look through the 25 previous winners, you’ll notice that nearly all of them won because they became more prolific scorers. Humphries is notable as one of only eight players to average a double-double this season, but other candidates have seen their numbers rise with far more fanfare. So, if Humphries is an unlikely MIP winner, why exactly would the Nets sing his praises? In the most basic sense, it’s likely to give his success an increased profile, which is a nice thing to do for someone who’s been one of the franchise’s lone on-court bright spots this season. However, Humphries is set to become a free agent this summer, and any increase in his profile will likely be attended by a sizable increase in salary, too. While it’s nice to commend one of your team’s players for a job well done, it’s also a risky move to act like he’s deserving of a major award when winning that trophy would provide justification for a major increase in salary. Humphries has been valuable to the Nets this season, but has he been good enough to warrant a big deal? In future negotiations, can’t Humphries and his agent now state that he should have won MIP and should be paid accordingly? The Nets, by their actions, seem to think he’s deserving. These aren’t reasons not to make an internet campaign for a deserving player, but it’s important to note that these actions have consequences beyond giving a valued member of the team a nice bit of publicity. When Rockets point guard Aaron Brooks won MIP last season, he looked like a big part of Houston’s future plans. In February, he was unceremoniously traded to the Suns to help clear the way for the red-hot Kyle Lowry. Would all teams be so willing to dump a player who had so recently won serious publicity for the team? Awards are nice, but they can often lock teams into sticking with players who may not deserve so much trust.(Video via TBJ)

Video: Taiwan Jones works on his 40-yard dash

Video: Taiwan Jones works on his 40-yard dash
Most performance facilities are tasked with making slow people faster for speed and explosion drills like the 40-yard dash (though some people are clearly beyond help), but here’s a slightly tougher question: How do you make a person who already blasts out of the gates unusually quickly, and take him to an even higher level? That was the question for Brent Callaway to answer in the person of Eastern Washington University running back Taiwan Jones, who has legitimate 4.3 speed (speed which transfers to the field, as well). Callaway, the Performance Manager at Athletes Performance, has worked with some of the real speedsters in the NFL and the pre-draft ranks. We recently shot video of him working with Jones on returning to form after a foot injury prevented Jones from working out at the combine. Teams looking to select a home-run hitter in the Chris Johnson or Jamaal Charles mold will be traveling to Jones’ pro day in the Bay Area in Mid-April, because he does have that type of speed. Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com has watched a lot more EWU film that I have, so I asked him what makes Jones so special. “Jones has true three-tier speed,” Rang told me. “He has an explosive burst vertically and laterally, as well as the acceleration to get to the second level of the defense. Once in the open field, his dynamic long speed takes over, making it tough for trailing defenders to get a proper angle on him. Questions about his level of competition and durability are fair. But there is no denying his suddenness and speed. Jones is the most dynamic open field runner in this draft.” And as Rang pointed out on his own blog after seeing the video below, the 10-yard splits in the 1.4-second range that Jones has been running would put him ahead of any other draft prospect in the 2011 class.  Here’s what Jones looks like right now.
